BI’s Perfect Storm?
BI has a lot to prove, and now is the time to do it. There has been a lot of talk lately in the BI circles that BI is a necessary business function. Particularly in today’s market, companies must be able to make data driven decisions. The challenge is, as with any BI program, the realization of value of the BI program. The realization of value has to be hard, tangible pieces of information that the company can use to transform its business.
But, what if even with good BI, or even mediocre BI, companies’ fail? In the category of “You can lead a horse to water”, I believe our focus as BI practitioners should shift in 2009 from metadata, masterdata, and architectural best practices to user adoption and analytics. Regardless to where we are in our program is it time to say “good enough, let’s see what we can get out of this thing?” Every artist must step back and look at their work with a critical eye. Now is our time to do that same thing. Look at our programs within the ecosystems that they exist in; determine if there are organizational impacts that prevent adoption and acceptance of BI. Address the issues that prevent adoption from occurring so that your organization can make informed decisions to weather the perfect storm.
