How To Get Started
While the term “Business Intelligence” has been around for over fifty years, I still get a lot of questions about what it is (what it isn’t) and how to start. After looking high and low for a good resource to refer to people I have realized that there are very few “how to” resources for getting started with BI. There are a lot of excellent books on specific functions of BI, such as dimensional data modeling, governance, dashboards, and the like. We will not cover those works here, but what I will attempt to do is fill the ‘Getting Started’ gap with a blog series. I have not attempted to do a blog series yet, and it does feel like a bit of pressure, but here we go.
For the next two months I will attempt to blog each week on “How to Get Started” with BI. This will cover all the basics of starting a BI program. For the next eight weeks I will cover these topics (these topics may change):
- What is BI, and more importantly, what isn’t BI? Do you need BI?
- The Five Disciplines of BI
- Gaining support for your BI Program
- Starting with Data Governance
- Creating a BI team
- Ensuring Good User Adoption
- Marketing your BI Program
- Ongoing management of your BI Program
These are short topics with a lot of content, but we will cover the basics for each in the blog posting. From this site we will launch a collaboration site for organizations that are getting started (or re-started) to create a collaborative discussion on these topics. Instructions for how to participate with the collaboration site will be in the first post planned for the week of April 12th. Please join me and feel free to forward this information to others.
