Just Start!

I remember when I was a teenager my mother would ask me to clean my room. One time she found me sitting in the middle of my clothes laden floor and asked me what I was doing. I was stumped, there was so much to do I didn’t know where to start. I have run across that scenario many times in my life. But my mother’s advice that day has stuck with me. Just start, it doesn’t really matter where. There is so much to consider when starting a BI program. I have seen that look of consternation on the faces of many a BI directors, including myself. Where do I begin? What’s more important, data quality, governance, BI application stabilization, metadata, architecture? With so many competing demands for time, attention and money it’s no wonder so many programs stall.

I have started something at a number of companies. I have earned the term of endearment “rebel rouser” more than once. It was never my intent to rouse, rebellious or not, but the value of getting that snowball started is priceless. Sure, if may be lumpy, it may even have some leaves in it, but it will gain size and momentum running down that hill regardless.

So, my motivational advice for today is JUST START! Where ever you are, whatever your considerations, just begin there. Push that snowball down the hill and start making the next one.
