This week I presented to very eager audience on “How to Avoid the Budget Ax”. The topic seemed almost too provocative, particularly in these challenging financial times. Everyone in the room seemed to be paying close attention for any nugget they might be able to glean. The reality is so much more challenging though. A few days later I was having lunch with a friend that attended the seminar and he said “Sure, the content was great, and maybe marketing your program is a really great way to remind people what you are doing, but what if the reality is you are stuck in a rut and unable to deliver a lot of value? What do you market then?” I found myself wishing that he had asked the question in the seminar. Because I am certain that other folks in the room had the same question. The answer is not an easy one. It’s the one that everyone hates to hear and almost everyone uses. The answer is: “It depends”. If you are stuck in a rut because you have delivered so much value you don’t know what else you can provide that is a very different place than if you are stuck because your organization has had a lot of fluctuation and you can’t gain any traction. The first situation is a nice stable place to be, but I suspect it’s the outlier. I suspect that most people are struggling with the second scenario and to that situation I answer:

1. Determine the health of your BI program (there are multiple ways to do this, including a free BI assessment that Lancet provides).
2. Get back to basics, delivering content rich reports and analysis that gets business where they live.
3. Stay the course. Once you have determined where your program is, and what the ‘basics’ mean to you, keep delivering as consistently and frequently as possible.
