So What?
Perhaps you are used to hearing “so what?” from your teenager, but I believe that BI professionals should ask this question more frequently.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked at a report or worse a dashboard, and asked “so what?” If you’re going to go to the trouble of reporting data you should know the decisions that need to be made from that data. You should always include the context of the data point. Don’t just include call volume; include trends in call volume and the percentage of 1st call resolutions. Don’t just include number of pending claims, include the claim lag rate for the last 6 months.
Before you develop or publish that next report take a serious look at it. Make sure you know what questions your business partners are trying to answer. Once in a while, ask your business partners what the “So What?” is, if they can’t find an answer then its time to go back to the drawing board.
